Any areas that you have unlocked and that are accessible to you will be available to tap on to move to. During the game you can check the story and your tasks in the journal on the left, and also access a map to fast travel on the bottom right.Keep checking the areas and try to work out what use the items you find might have.

In many cases you need to move on to locate items and then return to a previous area to use it.

And you will also find various collection items along the way, thee are not required to complete the story though. There are a lot of items to find and clues to discover.
